Does my salary count if I also have a side business?

Short answer
PAYE wages do not count towards MTD qualifying income. Add your self-employment turnover and property income before expenses. The relevant tax year matters as well as the amount.
An illustration, not a tax calculation
If your only income in 2025 to 2026 is £40,000 of PAYE wages and £5,000 of sole-trader turnover, the qualifying figure for that year is £5,000, not £45,000. That figure alone does not trigger an April 2027 start. Earlier obligations and exemptions still need checking.

Keep the annual return in mind
Income that is excluded from the MTD threshold may still need reporting on your tax return. If you use MTD, choose software that supports your full return.
Check your start date using the relevant tax-year figures.
Basis: Choose the right software
